In 1990, Canal Street's "Manto" opened, a pioneering glass gay bar designed for all to see inside. It paved the way for further developments in the area, leading it to become the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Manchester pride has taken place every year since 1985, celebrating one of the largest LGBTQ+ communities in the country.
